The partnership of William Schwenck Gilbert and
Arthur Seymour Sullivan is probably the most remarkable collaboration In the history of the musical theatre to date.
During a period of 25 years (1871 — 1896) the partners produced a series of 14 comic operas and one Cantata which, not only created an entirely new genre of British musical theatre and also revolutionised the art of stage direction, but also laid the foundation for all musicals that have followed.
Their comic operas became known collectively as the ‘Savoy Operas,’ named after the theatre built by impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte in which to present them by an opera company which, from 1875 until it disbanded in 1982, bore his name.
